The independent study module enabled us to learn new and
useful skills that were not only essential at the time, but will also be of
great importance in the following two years of the course. The tasks within
independent study demanded a variety of skills; first of all was the
questionnaire task. This required us to create a concise questionnaire for a
target audience that would produce interesting and valuable results. The other
task of transcription taught us how to clearly deal with spoken language and
how to then analyse it. Writing a literature review required a concise approach
to dealing with a variety of pieces of literature in order to achieve a
relevant investigation. Towards the end of the module, we participated in a
corpus investigation – which being something new to the majority of the
students – involved learning how to first of all use a corpus and to then learn
how to use it correctly in order to obtain the best possible results. Overall, the
course mainly required us to learn skills that we had never practised before,
but it also required development of skills that we already had.
