Independent Study

Throughout the year, independent study taught us vital skills which are very useful, especially when studying linguistics.
Firstly, the questionnaire module was useful as it brought to our attention the importance of how questions should and should not be presented, in order to gain the best results. The transcribing tasks allowed me to finally get to grips with the way in which spoken language can be written and analysed. It was helpful as it allowed me to be more confident when transcribing my own data. The most useful task was the corpus investigation; it was an entirely new topic for me and I learnt a lot on how to perform a corpus investigation and the interesting results which can come from one.
